Intro to Freecycle

25 Jun

Most of you are familiar with the “leave a penny, take a penny” cup located by the cash register at many stores; Freecycle follows the same idea. This is especially good if you have items that cannot be donated traditionally, such as carpet remnants or perishable food. You set the terms of the item pick up/delivery with the person you are giving/receiving. No money changes hands and no illegal items. Some people ask for broken china for art projects, while others give away flat panel TVs. It’s a great way to keep usable stuff out of landfills and go directly to people who will appreciate it most. I’ve been doing it for years and have met a lot of really great people who give as well as take. To find a group near you, go to the Freecycle website or simply enter the word “Freecycle” and your zip code in a search engine, such as Google or Bing.

Making a Fresh Start

24 Jun

ImageLet’s face it, for a long time we have had way too much stuff we don’t really need, and have wasted a lot of it. Somewhere along the way we confused what we possess with who we are and lost touch with what is truly important. Just like our pioneers that realized they had to toss the china set and grandfather clock off the covered wagon in order to make it over the mountains on their journey west, we have been given the opportunity to reevaluate our priorities and rid ourselves of unnecessary things that are bogging us down.

In this blog, I share my tips to help people live more comfortably within a budget. Some tips will apply to you while others will not; as they say “take what you need and leave the rest”.  Rather than making big changes, I offer a way to incorporate small changes into your lifestyle; it’s about changing your attitude and behaviors for better life-long habits, rather than a quick fix that you will abandon as soon as the economy improves. So let’s not waste time whining bout what we feel we have lost; let’s hit the reset button, and make a fresh start.
